Our Asks

This page details our campaign objectives for improving conditions at HMP Wandsworth.

​

We also support action on areas of national policy which could have a particular impact at Wandsworth:

​

  • More powerful regulators, able to take actions which cannot be ignored.

  • Staffing:

    • there should be sufficient good quality staff always available to run the regime, which means making a realistic allowance for staff absences;​

    • improved recruitment, including Governor involvement;

    • root out remaining pockets of poor behaviour by staff

Decent cells and showers

  • Hot water and daily showers in hygienic conditions

  • A working sink and a working toilet (with privacy screen or curtain)

  • Reasonable cell temperatures throughout the year

  • Adequate clothing and easier hand-ins for families

  • Regular access to laundry

More time out of cell

  • At least 4/5 hours out of cell for every man, every day including weekends

  • Time out of cell consistent and predictable

  • All men can exercise every day

Something useful to do

  • Significantly improved access to education and training for all men

  • Ensure all education and training sessions have full classes

  • Regular, frequent access to books and return of book trollies to the wings

Make visitors feel welcome

  • Treating visitors like your own family with decency and respect

  • Cleaning the visitor facilities regularly and upgrading toilets

  • Better quality snacks available at all visits

Reduce self-harm and suicide

  • No self-inflicted deaths where the actions of prison and healthcare staff have contributed more than minimally

  • CCTV to check on ACCT observations and random audits, reviewed by IMB

  • Every healthcare member of staff can and does use NOMIS

  • With prisoner consent, prison staff to have access to health information (System One)

  • Training on mental health and vulnerable prioners training for all staff, with refreshers

  • Emergency calls to Safety Custody answered and not ignored

All treatment and medication on time

  • Every man to get all medication at the right time

  • No delay in health assessments including mental health

Support for foreign nationals

  • Facilitating a visitor scheme for those whose families can't visit

  • Officers and healthcare have a better understanding of FN issues and special conerns

Keeping in touch with families

  • Having prompt access to PIN numbers

  • In-cell phones treated as lifelines and failures followed up urgently

  • Allowing diversion services that are safe and can save families money and preserve spends

  • All published numbers for HMPW to be regularly checked to ensure they are correct, and the phone is answered
